Unresponsive lock screens recorded by iPhone 12 mini owners. With their diminutive new smartphone, some early iPhone 12 mini buyers are having a tough experience. Users on MacRumors, the Apple forum, and Reddit say that on the lock screen, the 12 mini’s touchscreen is partially unresponsive. Not only would they have trouble launching the camera or torch, but they will also swipe up using their thumb to unlock them. Other fingers work, but for a phone that is made to be used one-handed, that is not very helpful.

The problem can come down to conduction or grounding, some users suspect. When the phone is plugged in or used without a case the problem often appears to be solved.

We asked for a comment from Apple. Just how prevalent the problem is is not clear, but it is common enough to be more than an isolated event. Either way, it’s not the best start for an iPhone that many see as the lineup’s standout product.
